Residential / Architecture + Construction

The Courtyard House

A contemporary family residence shaped around natural light, cross ventilation, privacy, and a central courtyard that connects everyday spaces with nature.

Residential Architecture

Main courtyard facade — designed to bring daylight and greenery into the center of the home.

A home organized around light, air, and everyday life.

The Courtyard House was designed for a young family looking for a private home that could still feel open, bright, and connected to the outdoors. The site required a careful balance between privacy from the street and natural ventilation throughout the interior.

Instead of placing all rooms around the perimeter, the house is organized around a central courtyard. This internal landscape brings daylight, fresh air, and visual connection into the living, dining, circulation, and family areas.

Creating openness without losing privacy.

The main challenge was to create generous interior spaces on an urban site surrounded by neighboring properties while maintaining privacy, natural light, and airflow.

The courtyard becomes the heart of the house.

The design places an open-air courtyard at the center of the plan, creating a visual and environmental anchor for the surrounding rooms. Living spaces remain connected while maintaining clear functional zones.

Central Courtyard

Creates light, ventilation, greenery, and visual connection.

Layered Privacy

Uses walls, screens, landscape, and orientation to protect private areas.

Passive Cooling

Encourages airflow through opposite openings and shaded internal spaces.

Material Continuity

Repeats selected materials between interior and exterior spaces.

A private home that still feels open.

The completed house balances privacy, openness, natural light, and everyday functionality. The courtyard creates a consistent visual connection between spaces while helping the home respond naturally to Yogyakarta’s tropical climate.

“The house feels open without sacrificing privacy. Formora helped us understand each design and construction decision, and the result feels calm, practical, and genuinely suited to our family.”
